Many have asked me why I am running for Tooele City Mayor; they have also asked what I intend to do as Mayor, if I have the good fortune to be elected. Here is my response.
I have served on the Tooele City Council for almost 14 years. During that time, I have learned a lot about what the duties of the Mayor are. I have worked closely with our current Mayor and his wonderful and professional department heads and the hard working staff. What I have learned is that the duties of the Mayor are very complex. I have come to the decision that I am the most seasoned and qualified of the current candidates.
I am not looking for new employment. I happen to love my career of thirty four years, however, I feel that to be Mayor is more than just a job, it takes someone of experience to do the work and manage the resources of the City. I have worked closely with Mayor Dunlavy for twelve years thus giving me an edge over my challengers in leadership and experience. If elected, I am willing to retire from my current profession to take on the tasks of managing our great City.
All of the elements that make up the finances of a city can be boiled down to one source - taxes. Our City is financed through taxes. Over the time that I have served, we have managed your tax dollars well. We have been diligent and frugal in our expenditures. Property taxes have not been increased by Tooele City for decades. Will we have to raise taxes ever? Yes, maybe, we will have to have that discussion someday. We have financed our growth through current funding sources. If we want more things, we will have to decide ...together! to finish a park, build a fire station on 1000 North, or move our excellent police department into a better location where they can serve the public more efficiently, will require funding. Under Mayor Dunlavy's leadership some of those plans are in motion. I promise to continue working towards those goals. I expect to have those discussions with the City Council and the public when I am elected. Would I like to have them now? Of course! But the decisions to move forward on them is a slow and deliberate process. I will not act carelessly just because the actions are attractive.
Let's work together to secure our future and grow Tooele City properly following the long established processes with which I am experienced.
Remember... Leadership Comes From Experience!
I would appreciate your support and your vote.
